May I have an extension on [some assignment]?
TL;DR - NO
For more than a decade, my late work policy was what many teachers considered liberal or loose. But it worked. Many teachers with whom I work(ed) implemented identical or similar policies. Others are considering doing so.
In the fall of 2023, however, I decided to change the way I grade student work and that necessitated a new policy on late work. This policy was even more flexible for students.
By the end of that semester, I realized that the policy wasn’t working so I changed it again. The policy in use starting in January 2024 is more flexible than the one in place for years, but slightly less flexible than in the Fall of 2023.
There are three “classes” of assignments:
- Quizzes
- Challenges
- Everything else (PSETs, Labs, Videos, etc.)
Quizzes
Quizzes are taken on certain days and can be retaken following certain guidelines (see Revision Process for more detail).
Challenges
Challenges are taken on certain days and can be retaken following certain guidelines (see Revision Process for more detail).
Everything else (PSETs, Labs, Videos, etc.)
The deadline for everything else is absolutely firm. Grades are calculated in such a way that these assignments matter, but they can’t “tank” your grade like you might be used to in other classes. If I grant extensions for these, the entire system breaks down. You will NOT be given an extension on any assignment from this class - which is everything but quizzes and tests.
